Notes:	During the last decades, a significant number of studies have addressed the causes of and appropriate responses to abuse and neglect of older people. As a result, theories such as the stressed caregiver, the learned violence, the psychopathology and the dependency hypotheses were developed. In more recent times, integrated theories of abuse and neglect have been recognised as more accurate accounts of the phenomenon. The elements that form the nucleus of such an exploratory model of abuse and neglect described in this article are stress and the caregiver; stress and the victim; environmental stressors; learned violence; and ‘impairment’ and abuse. The definitional debate and new directions for research are also discussed.
