Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a US study which contrasted the experiences of families in which both domestic violence and child maltreatment were present, with those where only child maltreatment occurred. An overview of research into the links between child abuse and domestic violence is provided. Findings suggest the need for more qualitative approaches to analysing the dynamics of abuse within families and the role of both the abused and the abuser in perpetuating the cycle of violence. The role domestic violence plays in influencing protection workers’ decision to substantiate abuse is also considered. Some limitations of the research project are identified and the implications of the findings for further research and for child welfare practice and policy are discussed.
