Notes: | This article presents a literature overview of intimate partner violence and depression in relation to health concerns, morbidity and mortality rates in the United States. It outlines the screening and assessment of intimate partner violence in the US, and also points to cultural issues faced by women from certain ethnic groups who may feel uncomfortable disclosing intimate partner violence to nurses. It discusses how clients who are exposed to intimate partner violence are at risk for depression, suicide and homicide, and suggests that disclosure of intimate partner violence should be accompanied by non-judgmental support and clear documentation of physical and emotional findings by nurses. It suggests that consistent support from family and friends, including non-judgmental listening and discussion of options, can facilitate the buffering effects of such support against suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts. |
