Notes:  Presents the programme model, methodology and results of an evaluation of 12 community-based support groups for female victims of domestic violence offered by the Coordinated Family Violence Program in the Waterloo region of Ontario, Canada. The study assessed the efficacy of the groups in terms of their capacity to meet five general goals identified as being common to the majority of support groups in the course of the literature review. These included: the future safety of women; recognition of the violence as unacceptable; the reduction in self-blame and enhancement of self-esteem; a better understanding of why battering occurs; and the many structural issues underlying its presence in society and the development of support networks. A follow-up of the pre- and post-group questionnaires was conducted six months later, though it is noted that its utility was limited by the small number of women who responded. Argues that the results show the programmes are meeting many of their set goals and that clients have made significant gains in a range of areas. Advocates for further studies into this relatively under-researched area.
