Notes:  Presents the methodology and findings of a US research project exploring victims’ reasons for following through with the prosecution of a violent partner in domestic violence cases. Outlines some of the major systemic barriers which lead to the dropping of criminal charges. A review of existing research into reasons for opposing prosecution and frequency of victim ‘drop out’ is also provided. Fear of reprisal, lack of resources, conflicting emotions about prosecution and a lack of understanding of court processes are identified as contributing factors towards victim reluctance to prosecute. Some of the policy implications of these findings are discussed.
