Notes:  Provides a background to research into father-child relationships, visitation and domestic violence before presenting the methodology and results of a [US] study aimed at exploring the impact of visitation by non-resident fathers on children who had previously witnessed domestic violence during their parents' relationship. Findings suggest emotional and behavioural outcomes for preschool-aged children are generally better where visitation rights are granted than where they are denied, but that where severity of violence was high, visitation did not have a significant impact. Limitations of the study, some of the ethical issues it raised and implications for future practice and research are discussed.
