Notes:	Outlines the methodology and findings of a US study which used maternal reports to examine the post-traumatic stress symptoms of children who had either witnessed domestic violence or were currently living in domestic violence situations. Assesses the applicability of the DSM-IV criteria to trauma symptoms exhibited by young children in these contexts. The use of the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) to identify trauma symptoms in children’s behavioural functioning is also challenged on the basis that it merely measures the frequency of certain behaviours, rather than assessing specific responses to traumatic events. A review of research into trauma symptoms of children exposed to domestic violence is conducted and it is suggested that the results of the present study support previous findings that the criteria for diagnosis of PTSD under the DSM-IV are not appropriate for young children. The tendency for children with re-experiencing trauma symptoms to exhibit greater levels of externalising behaviour is highlighted and some possible reasons for this, as well as future directions for research, are suggested.
