Notes: | This article looks at a US study that extends prior research (which only looked at trauma symptoms associated with exposure to separate types of violence), by examining traumatic stress symptoms associated with 2 types of violence exposure (community violence and partner violence). Ninety low-income African American women from an urban area completed measures assessing exposure to community violence, partner violence and trauma symptoms. It finds that increased reporting of trauma symptoms was associated with exposure to community violence and partner violence. Women who experienced high levels of exposure to both types of violence also reported more trauma symptoms than women exposed to only one type of violence or neither type of violence. Accumulation of exposures to violence seems linked with greater distress. It suggests that interventions with women exposed to violence should assess violence exposure in multiple areas and address the implications of multiple exposures to violence. |
