Notes:  This is a discussion in response to the Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan’s article on the typologies of men who are maritally violent. It suggests that risk prevention, management and treatment of marital violence need to address the central role of the male batterer. The primary intention of this discussion is to offer a further development of the typology by understanding it in terms of a more general model of personality functioning. It offers a critique of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) typology of personality disorders by outlining its 2 important limitations for understanding male batterers: (i) the APA has been inadequate in its coverage of aggressive, violent psychopathology; and (ii) its categorical model of classification of personality disorders, since, according to research, these are not adequately or accurately described by a single diagnostic category.
