Summarises the major findings of a three year research project aimed at evaluating changes made to the Family Law Reform Act 1995 and assessing their effectiveness in achieving stated objectives. Key areas of concern identified include the lack of evidence that changes have eased the burden of parenting on women; conflicting interpretations of legislation leading to increased disputes and a lack of clarity; evidence that children’s welfare is being compromised in the new approach to interim decision making; increasing incidence of disputes about contact, possibly motivated by a desire to reduce child support liabilities; and increased pressure on women who fear violence to agree to contact arrangements. Recommendations for reform are briefly set out and the authors invite readers’ responses to the report.
