Provides a background to the development of domestic violence outreach services in Australia and outlines the role, target groups and structure of the Western Domestic Violence Outreach Program (WDVOP). Describes the responsibilities of WDVOP’s workers including community education, crisis intervention, referral and advocacy. Highlights the major role WDVOP plays in relation to preventing homelessness and working with women who choose to remain in the home with the abuser, discussing the various housing options available to women and children escaping domestic violence. Advocates for legislative and policy reform that would allow for a co-ordinated, flexible and comprehensive response to domestic violence situations. Argues the WDVOP is an example of best practice and a model for working towards the elimination of violence against women and children.
