Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a US study that examined the mental health of a sample of African American women exposed to intimate partner abuse and assessed the cultural relevance of social support and spirituality to their capacity to cope with their experiences. A review of literature pertaining to the traumatic effects of intimate partner abuse and culturally relevant ways of coping is also conducted. Findings suggest a strong relationship between the incidence of partner abuse and post traumatic stress disorder even after controlling for the effects of social support and spirituality. Some implications of the findings for social work practice are highlighted.
