Notes:  Women in abusive relationships are active in creating a safe space for themselves and their families. Diverse strategies such as fighting back or calling the police are utilised to prevent, stop or escape from the violence. This article presents an instrument -IPV Strategies Index- to measure the nature and extent of women's responses to abuse across specific domains of strategies. The items for the index were derived from a literature review, the authors' experience, two focus groups with advocates and one focus group with battered women. Additionally, almost 300 women in the US who have experienced domestic violence answered a questionnaire to develop the final list. The index contains thirty-nine items classified in formal network, legal, safety planning, informal network, resistance and placating strategies.
