Notes: | Reports on the design methodology and results of a US study whose purpose was to predict relationship status by examining a set of interpersonal, environmental and cognitive factors and how they interrelate. The seventy-six female participants were recruited from two community health centres in a mid-size north-eastern city and had been in a heterosexual relationship that involved physical or psychological abuse during the previous six months. Models were constructed which first distinguished between psychological abuse and physical abuse. Then, the key variables of ‘relationship efficacy’ and ‘resource utilisation’ were studied as they were thought to act as mediators of the relationship between abuse and relationship status. The full physical abuse model and the full psychological abuse model were each tested and compared and then re-tested to include any mediational effects. A lengthy discussion concludes that both physical and psychological abuse, but particularly the latter, are directly correlated to the ending of a relationship but the importance of factors affecting women ‘s decision to leave depends on the type of abuse being experienced. |
