Notes:  It has been argued that domestic violence shelter-based resources fail to prevent intimate partner homicide against women. This study questions the research methodology of such recent findings on intimate partner homicides. Data from state agencies, individual shelter reports and state and national resource directories of California, USA for the years 1987 to 1998 were examined. Significant limitations were found with the information and data infrastructure on shelter-based organisations. Similarly, the reliability and validity of aggregate measures on domestic violence resources and services presented drawbacks.
