Notes: | This article addresses the drawbacks caused by the deployment of the battered women syndrome construct as the unique expression of women who experience domestic violence. Cases in which the characteristics and circumstances of the female defendant contravene the expectations of the syndrome such as strength, assertiveness and extramarital sexual activity are discussed. The author, who has assisted several criminal and civil cases in the US as expert witness on the effects of battering, favours an approach that includes the social, relational, institutional and psychological impacts of abusive behaviour. |
