Notes:  Discusses the role of shelters in assisting women to access welfare under the new US Family Violence Option, a system developed to allow states to waiver work and/or programme requirements for receiving welfare benefits for women who have been victims of domestic violence. The methodology and results of the study are presented and it is argued that advocates who work at shelters play a key role in assisting battered women through the application for waiver process but that a number of gaps in service delivery exist, including the need for referrals to other agencies and improving strategies for helping women make the transition to welfare-funded shelter accommodation.
