Notes:	This reviews research and literature after the passage of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA) in the United States. The legislation promotes legal interventions, and encourages and funds research to inform policy and to evaluate practices to prevent violence against women. This article reflects and assesses issues such as: definition of violence against women; its incidence and prevalence; its causes; prevention; criminal justice interventions; unintended consequences; and gaps in research.
