Notes:	General Overview: This paper presents the results of a United States national survey examining batterer intervention programs (BIPs) and the provision of batterer intervention services. Mandatory arrest laws for domestic violence have increased the number of offenders processed by the criminal justice system and it has become common for offenders to be referred to these kind of perpetrator programs. Discussion: The paper provides background to BIPs by discussing key themes from the literature and previous surveys. The author sets out the methodology used in the national survey. In discussion, the author describes and enlarges upon some of the findings of the [US] survey regarding the work carried out by BIPs, the clients treated, income received and data collected by programs. In conclusion, the author states that knowledge of ‘what works’ in violent behaviour change programs is limited, thus, many service providers are guided by personal opinion, tradition and clinical experience, as much as by empirically informed knowledge. The author makes suggestions for improving information sharing and dissemination, and for establishing a national organisation to lobby for policies and funding for improvements to BIP services.
