Notes:	This article reviews the issues and nature of abuse in palliative care. It looks at how the family as the unit of care underpins the philosophy and practice of palliative care, but questions the traditional construct of the family unit as functional and unproblematic. From the literature review, it identifies the issue of abusive family relationships as being neglected in palliative care research, and suggests that this issue needs to be responded to in order to achieve the aim of ensuring holistic and quality end-of-life care for terminally ill people. Risk factors for abuse of the elderly and the prevalence of abusive caregivers of the elderly are described.
