Presents the methodology and results of a large cross-sectional study of violence against women in New Zealand and discusses issues related to the consequent health outcomes. A sample of 2,855 women aged 18-64 years living in Auckland and North Waikato was interviewed and data entered into a questionnaire developed for the WHO Multi-Country Study on Violence Against Women. Results show a high prevalence of violence and support the view that intimate partner violence is a major contributor to women’s poor health. Suggests that prevention efforts be directed not only at reducing the perpetration of violence against women but also on fostering appropriate responses within the health care system.
