Notes:  Documents some of the issues raised by refuge staff working with women experiencing mental health problems, and provides an overview of various difficulties associated with the overlap between the mental health and welfare professions. Attributes many of the issues raised to the differences between the two systems: the medical/psychiatric/hierarchical approach of mental health services and the socialist/feminist approach of women’s refuges. Argues that deinstitutionalisation and decreased government funding in the welfare sector have placed increasing pressure on women’s refuges and staff, untrained in the mental health field, to provide assistance and care to women with psychiatric illnesses. Describes the development of protocols between refuges and mental health services as a vital first step in the two systems working together to assist women escaping violence and experiencing mental health issues.
