Notes:	Speech by Muriel Cadd at ACWA Conference-Sydney Sept 2002 This paper points out the necessity of a more effective child protection scheme. A summary of the First Aboriginal Child Survival Seminar held in 1979 is presented to show the improvements and to reveal that certain failures still prevail. The author emphasises the importance of working with families and communities when tackling the needs of Indigenous children. Services should be individualised and culturally conscious. Mainstream agencies need to be informed of the local Indigenous communities and agencies, and acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for the decision-making process. She concludes that partnerships should be developed to overcome services’ fragmentation and strengthen Indigenous agencies and communities.
