Notes:  Defines and discusses the concept and procedure of screening women for psychosocial problems, in particular domestic violence, and assesses its viability as a policy directive in public health. Discusses some of the criticisms directed at the specificity and sensitivity of various screening tools, highlighting the difficulties associated with developing a standardised and formulaic approach to such a complex issue. Lack of education and training amongst medical staff and the economic and social consequences arising from diagnosis are identified as areas of concern. Utilising practice examples from the US and Australia, it is argued that our focus must be shifted away from increasing disclosure rates and providing precise diagnoses towards evidence based policy and quality of service response.
