Notes:  Article describes the pilot project ‘Strong Family, Strong Community, Strong Future’ which has been developed by the Northern Territory Government’s Aboriginal Family Violence Strategy. The project implements a ‘bottom-up’ approach to community development by defining the family or clan as the basic social unit rather than the community and requires families themselves to volunteer for inclusion and to define the extent of their own family membership so that participants range from small nuclear families to much larger clan groupings. Participating families define and prioritise the problems to be addressed and a project team then assists each family in designing a specific response. Training and professional development opportunities are offered through the Department of the Chief Minister to representatives of each family unit and quarterly gatherings will provide opportunity for additional training and discussion. The project will initially be tested and refined in four communities which will then serve as centres of expertise as the project is extended to other areas.
