Notes: | Presents the ‘Women’s Safety Strategy’, the Victorian Government’s approach to reducing violence against women. Launched in October 2002, the strategy is led by the Minister for Women’s Affairs and defines a single policy to be implemented by all departments in their efforts to increase women’s safety. All forms of violence are covered including family violence, sexual assault, workplace bullying, sexual harassment and racial violence. The strategy comprises three parts: Women’s Safety Strategy: A Policy Framework, which gives the guiding principles and policy directions for the next five years; Acting on the Women’s Safety Strategy, which outlines specific government initiatives; and Women’s Safety, Women’s Voices, a collection of personal experiences in women’s own words. Measures currently being undertaken include: the implementation of a code of practice by Victoria Police for police responses to family violence; training for judicial officers conducted in cooperation with the Judicial College of Victoria; the formation of a Victims’ Support Agency; allocation of funds to expand housing options for women and children experiencing family violence and also to be used by Magistrates to direct men to attend programmes in behaviour management. |
