Notes:  Provides an overview of research conducted into child-to-parent violence in the United States, before presenting the methodology and results of a study aimed at exploring the factors associated with violence by children against mothers and its association to violence by male partners of mothers. The findings indicate that the victims of child-to-parent violence are predominantly mothers and suggest strong support for the ‘violence begets violence’ thesis, be it between parents or between mothers and children. The complex dynamics of abusive relationships and the various ways in which risk factors can manifest themselves are, however, recognised and it is argued that further research in this area is needed.
