Notes:	Drawing on Brisbane Magistrate Court files for domestic violence protection orders in 2001, this article examines the criminal law’s response to domestic violence allegations and incidents and suggests that the criminal law continues to be seldom utilised by police in dealing with violence in domestic settings. While the number of applications for AVOs (Apprehended Violence Orders) continues to rise, the number of criminal prosecutions for assault or other injury in domestic disputes remains low. Some of the reasons for the lack of criminal prosecution in this area are explored and it is suggested that the effect of enacting specific domestic violence legislation has been to separate it from, and minimise it in comparison to, other forms of criminal assault.
