Notes:	Outlines the methodology and results of a US study designed to explore the sources of psychological, relationship and marital stress amongst non-alcoholic women whose partners were receiving outpatient treatment for alcoholism. Specific emphasis was placed on coping behaviours adopted by female spouses of alcoholics and the factors associated with lower levels of relationship satisfaction, such as domestic violence and the absence of social/family support networks. The findings reveal an unexpected positive association between severity of partner alcohol abuse and marital satisfaction but the limitations of these results are highlighted. Concludes that spousal functioning is perhaps more closely related to coping responses and relationship variables than wider social/environmental factors.
