Notes:  Post-colonial Indigenous masculinity has been shaped by discriminating and destructive policies of a patriarchal society. Sexist dominance allows disempowered men to recover power through their violence against women and children. Fatherhood occurs after years of child mistreatment and involvement with the criminal justice system as a young adult. Former victims of abuse become perpetrators, thereby preserving the cycle of violence. Aboriginal women place responsibility for men’s deviant behaviour on alcohol and substance abuse and their traumatic experiences as children. Programmes implemented in the community are the substance of this paper.
