Notes: | This paper presents the perceptions about support needs and healing of three female supporters of Aboriginal women who experience family violence. The first issue identified is help seeking, Aboriginal women are prevented from seeking help due to lack of awareness of the abuse and shame. Conversely, some women choose to deal with the violence via focusing on the behaviour and not on the perpetrator. They might leave their children in a safe place while working through the violence. However, since not all Aboriginal women understand and/or manage to address the cycle of violence, more education, safety planning and empowerment are required. Healing models based on a sense of community are suggested. |
