Notes:  General Overview: This paper examines the various efforts made in Australia to support women who have experienced domestic violence to stay at home safely.

Discussion: The establishment of women’s refuges in the seventies helped many women escape violence. However concerns have been raised that removing women and children from their homes has contributed to homelessness for some victims. This paper explores some of the different efforts that have been made to remove perpetrators from the home and allow women and children to remain safely. It examines early pilot projects in South Australia, integrated models in the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and Victoria and recent pilot projects in New South Wales.

* risk assessment and safety planning should be conducted, and security upgrades made available
* the accommodation, financial and counselling requirements of the excluded partner need to be addressed, and
* an integrated system to plan, monitor and resource the reforms is necessary.

The author concludes that there is a need for careful evaluation of the various models that have been used in Australia.
