Notes: | This issues paper explores individual and group work approaches to intervention with women subjected to violence and abuse in their intimate relationships. It begins with a discussion of the historical context and its role in shaping ideas about the role of counselling/therapy in responses to women subjected to violence in their intimate relationships. Explores some of the ‘unanticipated consequences of the political activity which placed domestic violence on the public agenda, such as the stereotyping of ‘victims’. Reviews the qualitative studies which identify the agency and help-seeking of women in the face of perpetrator abuse and poor service responses. Overviews a range of practice approaches including groupwork, individual counselling, trauma-based approaches, safety planning, and postmodern approaches. Concludes that, to maximise the effectiveness of interventions with women who have experienced violence, it is important that practice models emphasise women’s safety and perpetrator accountability; explore and validate women’s experiences; acknowledge strengths and avoid pathologising women; attend to the diverse cultural and social contexts of women’s lives; and locate the range of interventions within the wider socio-political context. |
