Discusses the importance of recognising the losses of people who have experienced domestic violence and/or sexual abuse, and of assisting them during the grieving process. Social restrains prevent abused women from expressing and mourning their losses. Even when leaving a violent relationship seems beneficial, women also face the loss of marriage, loved ones, expectations and self-esteem. Feelings of shame generate disenfranchised grief that aggravates their situation and reduces sources of support. Instead of providing intensive short-term support to solve immediate problems, the authors suggest a holistic response that understands and treats grief.
