Notes:  This article presents one of five case studies described in Domestic violence reporting and disasters in New Zealand, Regional Development Dialogue (RDD), Vol. 30, No. 1, pp. 79-90.
This article presents the findings from a study of domestic violence reports during a natural disaster (snow storm) in 2006 in New Zealand. The researchers used quantitative data from a women's refuge and interviews from service providers and government agencies. The findings indicated that in the month after the storm, the women's refuge saw an increase in service needs, but other organisations did not see any changes. Additional findings presented, address the context, cause and history of the domestic violence reported and organisational plans and policies for emergency preparedness. The authors also provide a detailed review of the international literature and research on domestic violence and natural disasters as well as recommended changes for policy and planning at organisational and government levels.
