Notes: | Reports on a US qualitative study on teens’ stories of abuse and violence before and during pregnancy. Using blended content and thematic analysis, the author relates the variety of abusers for a group of 40 pregnant adolescents aged 18 to 20. Seven themes were identified in the stories of violence: seeking safety (self-protection with advantages and disadvantages); losing faith (negative experiences with social justice institutions and the police); experiencing loss (compromised reproductive health); living on the edge (substance abuse); taking the next step (developmental issues); crying out for help (suicide attempts); and fluid relationships (loss of family relationships and serial monogamy). Recommends questions about past pregnancies, sexual abuse, and multiple perpetrators (not just intimate partners) be included in routine screening. |
