Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a study aimed at exploring the culturally specific experiences of American Muslim women with respect to marriage practices and their relationship to abuse. An interpretative approach, which utilises various interviewing techniques to incorporate individual life histories into the research, was adopted and the findings are discussed in terms of common themes. Suggests that marriage for Muslim women is a highly significant life experience rooted deeply in culture and traditional practices. In the context of abusive relationships, such practices become of great importance to how women manage and/or escape their situation. The need for further research and intervention in this area is emphasised.
