Notes:	Utilising the case study of an Aboriginal restorative justice initiative in Canim Lake, British Columbia, Canada, this article presents a background to the development of Aboriginal-designed and -controlled alternatives to adversarial modes of criminal justice in Canada and critiques these developments in terms of their ability to allow for community-driven initiatives that challenge, rather than maintain, the status quo. Emphasis is placed on the mode through which the programme came about, the ways community ownership and support for the programme were ensured and how the needs of the community were then conveyed to government agencies and translated into policy. The preliminary outcomes of the programe are then reviewed and some of the major challenges facing this, and other Indigenous communities, are outlined.
