Notes:  Overview: In this article, the Canadian and Australian authors review sixteen research articles on perpetrators and victims' explanations for intimate partner violence. They provide a possible framework in which to adequately capture this data.

Discussion: The authors identify a lack of research with those involved in partner violence regarding their perceptions of factors contributing to violent events. When such research has been undertaken, it has lacked an overall conceptual model. There has been little synthesis in terms of research models, so the reasons given for domestic violence have seemed to vary widely.

In order to address this, the authors propose a three-level model of perceived influences on intimate partner violence. The model seeks to adequately capture the range of responses as to why intimate partner violence occurs, given by those involved. The three levels are: the background and personal attributes of the victim or perpetrator; current life circumstances; and the immediate precursors or precipitators that lead to physical violence. The authors then applied the model to a review of sixteen research studies.

Along with standardising the framework through the three-level model, the report suggests that research into gender differences and self-partner differences must also be undertaken in order to gain a better understanding of the factors that victims and perpetrators believe contribute to intimate partner violence.
