Notes:  Summarises the Australian participation and experience in Japan’s National Shelter Symposium held on 29-30 June 2002. The symposium intended to review a recently enacted law for the prevention of spousal violence and the protection of victims. An impressed Japanese delegation that visited Australia the year prior to the convention asked the author to present a keynote paper. They were particularly interested in the Women’s Services Network (WESNET), of which the author occupies the national chair, and also asked her to include the Australian legal framework, policies and visions. The article describes the network of Japanese women’s shelters and a visit to two of the refuges, one with a very secret and private approach and the other one with a communal attitude. The issue of prostitution in Japan is also discussed.
