Notes:  Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and also an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, reports on decisions made at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) in March 2013 in this editorial comment.

This brief article declares the UNCSW commitment to protecting women and girls from experiencing violence and focuses on the importance of bringing about policy and legislation change to increase women’s autonomy to make choices about their sexual and reproductive health and to access associated health care. Osotimehin concludes by re-emphasising the Commission’s clear position on the unacceptability of violence against women and girls and reinforces the need for a multi-disciplinary, cross-service and cross-sector response to protect women’s health.
