Notes:  Presents the methodology and results of an American study aimed at comparing the demographic characteristics, criminal histories, histories and severity of domestic violence against heterosexual partners amongst men and women. A review of literature concerning domestic violence perpetrated by women and the debate surrounding the prevalence of female-to-male violence is conducted and some of the implications these findings have for risk assessment and the implementation of mandatory arrest policies are identified. Results of the US study indicate significantly more males have a criminal history revealing the potential for future violence and it is suggested that many of the female offenders who participated may have been acting in self-defence.
