Notes:	General Overview: This study explores the evolution, rationale and operation of domestic violence courts in the United States. It provides a comprehensive picture of the 208 confirmed domestic violence courts (i.e. courts with a specialised domestic violence calendar or dedicated judge) across the country. Discussion: The study used a mixed methods design, with the research undertaken in four main stages: the compilation of a compendium of courts; site visits to fifteen courts in five states (California, Florida, Illinois, New York and Washington); a national survey; and phone interviews with a subsample from the survey. The researchers found that there was a strong focus on the objectives of victim safety and offender accountability across the courts, despite significant variations in policies and protocols. Courts were less consistent in the priority given to efficiency in case processing, correct application of state legislation, and offender rehabilitation.
