Garvan discusses “A Point of Vulnerability”, a preliminary study of the links between mothering issues and domestic violence, as well as commenting on the literature linking domestic violence with pregnancy and motherhood. The study, which resulted from conferences held in Australia in conjunction with the Association for Research on Mothering, argues that the family is a feminist front line where efforts to defeat the threat of domestic violence should include a preventative strategy which will be valuable when women are at their most vulnerable, that is, when they are pregnant or have small children. Reference is also made to the views of Belinda Probert, Joy Puls and Rosemary Pringle regarding gender culture and the need for the government to implement rational family policies covering the areas of industrial relations and social security.
