Notes: | Reviews recent contributions and improvements in the development of spousal assault risk instruments which have emerged in response to increasing numbers of perpetrators of domestic violence being processed through the US criminal justice system. Four tools are discussed: the Danger Assessment Scale (DA), the Spousal Assault Risk Assessment (SARA), the Propensity for Abusiveness Scale (PAS) and the revised version of the Psychopathy Checklist. Argues that although the validity of risk assessment and violence prediction procedures and instruments, often relied on by courts, has shown gradual improvement and a greater consensus regarding important risk factors has been reached, the likelihood of spousal homicide remains difficult to predict. Highlights the need for continued evaluation of the reliability and validity of risk prediction instruments utilising multiple methods and sources of data collection and advocates greater recognition of these tools as but one part of comprehensive risk management and prevention strategies. |
