Presents an overview of which states and counties in the United States currently observe a set of standards in the implementation of batterer intervention programmes, before identifying some of the key elements of these standards. Trends in definition of major concepts, programme goals and protocols, ethical/professional requirements, fees, intake procedures, preferred modes of intervention and procedures for discharge are outlined, and the article concludes with a general discussion of the positive and negative aspects of the widespread development of intervention standards.
