Notes:  Provides a review of current literature on the sexual, physical and emotional abuse of women with disabilities, highlighting the variety of factors which can act to compound their vulnerability. A definition of ‘women with disabilities’ is proposed and it is suggested that existing research supports the proposition that women with disabilities are at a high risk of abuse, that the majority of perpetrators are men known to the victim and that abuse is most likely to occur either within their own homes, or in some other place of residence. In addition, women with disabilities face the relatively unique risk of abuse from personal assistance providers, health and social service providers and other persons essential to their independence, such as transport providers. An ecological model for assessing abuse among women with disabilities is then outlined, including environmental and cultural factors contributing to vulnerability, victim characteristics which might increase vulnerability and offender characteristics. Particular barriers to ending abusive relationships faced by women with disabilities are also discussed and the development of research and practice in this area is strongly advocated.
