Notes: | Looks at a mother’s experiences of adolescent violence with her two teenage children. The narrative encompasses her discussing her feelings of pain, powerlessness, vulnerability, anxiety, exhaustion and basic inability to cope with the constant onslaught of abuse and violence from her two drug-dependent teenagers. Addresses both the strategies and methods used by the mother (Mary) with the adolescents that did and did not work when trying to solve and end the problem of their abuse. Mary found that there was little help available to her as neither the police or courts took the adolescent violence seriously and several professionals questioned her capabilities as a mother. When Mary did find help it was through the children’s school counsellor who referred her to Anglicare’s “Breaking the Violence” programme for mothers of violent/abusive adolescents. Once involved in the programme, she found that she was not alone in suffering adolescent violence. Hearing other mothers speak about their experiences made her feel more empowered and less responsible for the violence she had experienced. |
