Notes:  Presents the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at examining whether different kinds of childhood maltreatment have variant long-term consequences for victims and evaluating associations between multiple forms of childhood maltreatment, intimate partner violence and psychopathology in adulthood. Results indicate that women exposed to intimate partner violence were at a greater risk of psychopathology and current relationship aggression than non-traumatised women, and that childhood maltreatment is significantly related to women’s capacity to function in later life. The need for further research into the links between childhood maltreatment and maladaptive adult relationships and development of interventions aimed at breaking cycles of revictimisation is emphasised.
