Notes:  Gives a brief commentary on WHO’s World Report on Violence and Health:, including the risk factors common to the seven categories of violence dealt with in the report, before discussing in greater detail the risk factors of poverty and alcohol abuse as they are linked to violence in Australia. Presents the report’s public health approach to the issue of violence and extrapolates from its worldview to the situation in Australia. It is suggested that Australian society is becoming more unequal in socio-economic terms, leading to marginalised groups who are at greater risk of violence. Highlights the report’s recommendation that society’s capacity for collecting data on violence should be increased and provides explicit examples from the Australian context on how that may be achieved.
